Academic Integrity, Plagiarism, and Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy
Purpose
The Morden Adult Education Centre is committed to maintaining high standards of academic integrity. Students are expected to complete all coursework honestly and demonstrate their own understanding of course material.
Academic Integrity
Academic integrity means completing your work independently and giving proper credit when using the ideas, words, or work of others. This includes all assignments, projects, tests, and examinations.
Failure to follow academic integrity guidelines may result in consequences, including loss of marks, assignment failure, or further disciplinary action.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the act of presenting someone else’s work, ideas, or words as your own.
Examples of plagiarism include:
- Copying from websites, books, or other students
- Submitting work that is not your own
- Using someone else’s ideas without proper citation
Students must ensure that all sources are properly cited using an accepted citation format.
Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools (e.g., ChatGPT or similar platforms) may be used only as a support tool, not as a replacement for student work.
Permitted Use:
- Brainstorming ideas
- Clarifying concepts
- Assisting with editing or organization
Requirements:
- Any use of AI must be clearly cited in the assignment
- Students must indicate how AI was used
Limitations:
- No more than 10% of any submitted assignment may include AI-generated content
- The majority of all work must reflect the student’s own thinking, understanding, and voice
Prohibited Use:
- Submitting AI-generated work as your own
- Using AI to complete entire assignments
- Using AI without proper citation
Failure to follow these guidelines will be considered a violation of academic integrity.
Tests and Examinations
All tests and examinations must reflect the student’s independent knowledge and understanding.
Expectations During Tests and Exams:
- No electronic devices of any kind are permitted, including:
- No use of AI tools, internet searches, or outside assistance is allowed
Any violation during a test or exam will result in immediate consequences, which may include a mark of zero.
Examination Procedures
- All final exams must be written in person at the Morden Adult Education Centre
- Students must arrive on time and be prepared to write
Time Expectations:
- Students should allow a minimum of 2–3 hours to complete the exam
- Exams must be completed before 4:00 PM
Students arriving late may not be permitted to begin if sufficient time is not available.
Consequences of Academic Misconduct
If a student is found to have violated this policy, the following actions may be taken:
- Re-doing the assignment
- Deduction of marks
- Assignment or test receiving a mark of zero
- Meeting with administration
- Removal from the course in serious cases
Student Responsibility
Students are responsible for:
- Understanding and following this policy
- Asking for clarification if unsure
- Submitting original work
- Properly citing all sources, including AI
